Words struggle to describe what it was like to walk across Iceland.

Instead, here are pictures.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Would be great to join you on a trip of this magnitude. Would love to do something like this, but always to afraid to try it alone for the first time!

The first step is always the hardest. 100% worth it though.

This looks like an amazing trip! Thanks for sharing your experience and these beautiful photos! Just ordered your book and can’t wait to read more about your adventures.

I’m planning to do the Iceland traverse this summer and have a quick question: How was the water situation on the way? How often were you able to restock and what did you use for water cleaning (to filter the silt from the typical glacier rivers)? Thanks a ton! 😀

Thanks Ben, I hope you enjoy the book. We never had a problem with water – we found a stream at least every 5km so always filled up and carried two litres each. We never cleaned the water because it was crystal clear and hoped it would be clear of all nasties – it turned out just fine for us – but I think there are portable water flasks with built in filters that you can get hold of. I have never used one though so I don’t know how well they work.

This looks really amazing, I’ve always wanted to do something like this or your trip across Europe. I was originally planning to hitchhike across Europe with my buddies at the end of the school year, but I recently enlisted in the Marine Corps so I wont be able to until I leave that. However, your pictures and stories are truly inspirational to me and I can only hope that I can make the same memories that you’ve made doing this. A lot of people are to scared or preoccupied to do the trips that you make, and I thought I might be too. After hearing your story of just dropping everything to follow your dream of adventure however, I know that I can do the same thing. Thanks to doing these adventures, and hopefully I’ll be able to have my own stories to tell one day!

Thank you for the lovely message, Joe. I hope you do get to do it one day too.

I am leaving for Iceland in 4 days! My route just happens to be similar to yours though I’m traveling from north to south. How many days did your trip take you?

    Thanks!

How exciting Ian. I wish I was back there myself! Our walk took us less than two weeks, but we got lost in the mountains at the beginning and essentially made no progress for three or four days. After this, we walked close to 50 km each day. Other walkers we met were walking 20 km each day, meaning their walk (if doing the same route) would have taken over a month. How long it takes you is dependent upon how fast you walk and how often you get lost! Good luck.

Hi, this looks like the most incredible adventure 🙂
(but so does everything you’ve done really!)
I was thinking of cycling around Iceland and wondered whether you just set up your tent anywhere without permission? Well let’s be serious, you shouldn’t need permission to be able to sleep on the Earth you live on!!
    Thank you! 🙂

Forgiveness is far easier to obtain than permission. We camped out each night without problems and this should be the way of the world – although sadly it is not. I am in the process of putting an extended story together about Iceland, and I am remembering the wind. It is relentless and tiring, and would make cycling very difficult, but you will have an amazing time cycling Iceland – just be prepared for a difficult ride.
