A few days ago, I was with a friend and we were talking about jobs. This friend does not like their job and asked what my thoughts were, knowing full well that I would tell them to leave it and do something that they enjoyed. Rather than doing this, I took advice from Roz Savage’s latest book and suggested that they write out multiple different versions of their own obituary:
-An obituary if they continued working the same job
-An obituary if they quit their job and things went wrong
-An obituary if they quit their job and things went ‘right’
The results were interesting. The first version described everything wrong with what they were doing in life, the second version described every fear they had about quitting what they hated, while the third version was everything that they hoped for in life. When looking in detail at versions one and two, it wasn’t really clear which was worse (in the opinion of my friend): the life now without changes or the life in which everything went wrong.
Sometimes we hang onto something, even when it’s bad, simply because we are too scared to lose what we have.
That evening during the night, I decorated my friend’s wall using a large marker pen (with permission). This is what I drew.
All it meant, was that we are all scared of something (or many things). We simply have to have the courage to overcome those fears and live the life that we want to live. Life is short and we (most probably) only have one shot. Why waste it?
The words I drew on the wall were inspired by another blogger.
Armed with conscientiousness and a sense of the moment, there is no fear or foe we cannot conquer!!
Spot on!
Carpe Diem brother. Indeed, life is short, and when you meet your monster, and be assured, we all will, tackle it head on and take it, and life, by the horns!!
It’s always better to be armed when dealing with monsters, right?!
