Getting Around the US by Train and Bus

Europe is a breeze to get around, not just for its size, but because of all the budget carriers that allow you to fly from one country to another without breaking the bank. In fact, at the time of writing, this year I could fly (one way) from the UK to any one of fifty-five different countries for less than £100 ($132) – twenty nine of which can be reached for less than £20 ($26). Compared to a couple of decades ago, travelling really is cheaper than it has ever been before.

I am aware however, that not every part of the world is so privileged to have the luxury of cheap flights, and during my recent trip to the US, I found myself facing much greater prices to get between two places that I wanted to B (especially when I missed a flight and had to book a new one a few hours later). Instead of flying everywhere, I ended up using a bus when I needed to, and also looked into taking the train. However, I was a little overwhelmed by the vast number of bus and train services offered by competing companies and I struggled to find a place where I could search and compare different options.

If you find yourself in a similar situation – looking for land transport by bus or train in the US – you might want to check out Go Ticket – they are a new company that train and bus routes all over the US to help you find the option that is best for you. This is something that I wish I had been aware of when I was trying to book my own tickets.

I hope this helps you to find transport more easily (and affordably) across America – please do let me know how you get on.

If you are still in the US and happen to be in the Houston, Texas area I’d be happy to let you stay with me for a bit. I have two empty bedrooms at the moment and don’t expect to one of them any time soon.

That is kind of you, Rick, thank you. I am in the UK at the moment however and not sure when I will be back in the US.
