New Year, New Plans, New Zealand

My time in Australia is finally drawing to a close. I am spending it in Hobart, on the lovely island of Tasmania. It is by far my favourite place I have lived in Australia (I also lived in Perth, Carnarvon, and Darwin). The town is small enough to be walkable and large enough to have everything I could possibly need. Within three minutes of leaving my home, I am in a sprawling park and can walk for four or five hours (depending on which trail I choose), all the way to the summit of Mount Wellington. The views are pretty (image above), but it’s the climb that I love. People here are friendly and I’m a little bit sad that I didn’t come here earlier, but as my visa expires around Valentine’s Day, I have to get out of the country.

My flight is booked to Christchurch, New Zealand. I will be taking with me no more than 7kg and from there, I must acquire a bicycle. The time isn’t set, nor is the route, but I hope to spend around one month cycling and hiking from Christchurch to Milford Sound and then north. Of course, I will be almost exclusively free-camping. It’s nearly a decade since I was last in New Zealand and back then I was a teenager driving a huge camper van. This time will be a little bit different and I am very excited.

After New Zealand, the plan is a little unclear. I will head the US for a period of time before venturing back to the UK for the start of May. After this, I hope to cycle around Norway and maybe even camp out in a forest for a few weeks. I’d like to do a little more boat building – preferably without getting arrested this time – and beyond this, I have infinite other plans that will never happen, but we do our best with what we have. After a year of working long hours in Australia, I hope to get back into nature and enjoy a few long journeys once more.

May this year be a good one for us all.

Here is a little Christmas message from Tasmania.

    Great plan!

Love NZ, went there for holiday and only for 2 weeks some time ago, and it is easy to fall in love with the country 😉
