Free-Camping: Places I Sleep for Free

While hitching through 24 countries in Europe, I was often free-camping.

I only slept outside seventeen times, but here are some of my favourite places that I slept.

Not once was I disturbed or asked to move on.

Many people love Istanbul and I am sure that you can too. I loved Tanzania when I was there, but each place is different for each of us. Good luck.

    Hey Jamie!

I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of days now. I really need some advice. I live in Warsaw as an Erasmus student. But things in my life didn’t go quite well, so I’ve decided to hitchhike Europe. Although I’m normally a shy and cautious person, I’m determined to take this trip- so determined that I’ve never been in my life. I have nothing to lose now. This gives me the courage I need to make this thing real. The only problem is that I have almost no money. This may sound a bit crazy to you, but I think I’ll take this trip with around 100-150 Euros at most in my pocket. Although I’ve been living alone for 10 years now (I’m 22) and I’ve experienced a lot of difficulties, I have 2 question marks in my mind: (1) Do you think it is possible to do it with this amount of money, considering that I’ll stay outside for at least around 2 months? (2) Do you think it is possible to sleep in my tent every single night without couchsurfing or staying in someone else’s house? Because I’ve never been surfed or hosted before, so it’s a small possibility that someone might accept me without any feedbacks in my account. I’ll do this trip starting at May 30, so it’ll be summertime.

Your answers & comments mean a lot to me. I hope you can help me build this trip and forget anything else in my life but only myself and the joy.

    Thank you very much.

    Ozen

      Ozen,
      1) Yes it is – I have met people who travel entirely without money (although I have never chosen to do it myself)
      2) Yes. However, you shouldn’t have a problem finding hosts as we all have to start somewhere. Make a decent profile and send to lots of people in places you will be visiting (less popular places are MUCH easier for finding hosts).
I hope you have the most wonderful time. Keep me posted on your travels, they sound like a lot of fun.

    Hi Jamie
You slept outside 17 times, where did you sleep on the other nights? How often would you sleep in hostels?

Do you just setup camp, or do you ask permission like in the case of the service station spot in Italy?

Forgiveness is easier to obtain than permission.

Can you elaborate on what kind of tent you use? How many people is it rated for? Any idea the weight? Thanks!

I take the lightest / cheapest tent I can find, generally not much more than a kilo or £30. If I ever find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I might start thinking more about which specific tent to use!
