Don’t Ask Yourself, ‘What Do I Want From My Life?’ The Question is too Big

I used to ask myself, what do I want to be when I grow up? What do I want from life? At 27 years old, I still have no clear idea. The best answer I could come up with, would be that I want happiness and fulfillment, both of which are outcomes of my choices rather than choices in themselves. I think many other people must feel the same.

Instead of asking such a large and difficult question to yourself, try this. What do you want from today? What do you want from this week? What do you want one month from now?

If you deal with the little things, one at a time, the big things seem to work out. Living life in such a way has led me to from Korea to Norway to build a boat and I am ever so happy. It will soon lead me to Iceland too. I expect that I will love it. Everyday I do something I want to do. Everyday is filled with a series of small things that sustain happiness and in the longer term, offer fulfilment.

Ask yourself, what do you want from today and don’t worry about what you want from your life. The question is too big and it hurts our little minds.

Then go do that thing that you want to do today.

This is a great ‘zen-like” point. Focus on today, on the now and the rest of the path will start to become clearer and fall into place. At 39, I’m just now starting to figure out what the path should be and the next steps to make it happen….

I think we are never too early or too late to find what we want in life as it is an ever changing path. Best of luck on yours.

Despite maybe appearing a bit cheeky, but following might be a good “mantra” as well:

Yeah, it’s that simple and at the same time for a lot of people that hard. Because doing so means that you can’t always rely on others, can’t go the way all others around you are going. That means following your own road, and that scares people.

Wise words! Very very wise. I hope you continue to love Norway and go on to love Iceland 😀

I like to think like that. I have a list with things I value. I change it when I want, but always keep it with me. Every morning I read it and ask myself in the exension of this values: “who am I today?”, “what do I want my life to look like?”. Just that on almost a daily basis, to keep life simple but effective.

Henk, that sounds like a good plan. At times, we complicate life when it doesn’t need to be so very complicated. When we make it simple, everything seems so much easier and more pleasant.
