About 2012 and the End of the World

All around the world, December 21st has been predicted as the end of the world.

This stems from the Mayan calendar in which 21/12/2012 marks the end of the thirteenth baktun, at which point a cataclysmic world catastrophe was predicted to occur. Arguably, as modern Mayans indicate, it could simply indicate the start of the fourteenth baktun. But that is far less dramatic.

What will cause the end of the world? One theory is a collision with another planet. Turn to the experts. NASA state, “the world will not end in 2012.” They explain why but that isn’t important right now. The outcome is clear. A few years ago, CERN in Switzerland was turned on. I was far more worried about this causing the end of the world.

Let’s assume that as these words are typed, New Zealand is not a gaping abyss and land of destruction and that when I go to sleep I may indeed have to get myself up in the morning and consider buying Christmas presents. Even for my brother who hugged me goodbye in case it was the end of the world.

Would you be happy if the world ended right now? I thought about this for myself. Would I be happy dying right now? No. I have a lot more places to be, experiences to live, and words I haven’t said. As 2013 approaches it should become a priority to start doing the things in life that matter. Although 2012 isn’t the end of the world, we won’t be around forever.

Yesterday I felt like playing golf at the castle. My brother and I took a couple of golf clubs, walked to the castle in our little village and played golf across the moat, attempting to land our balls in a large bucket. I’m a terrible golfer. Crazy golf standard. Between us we hit the bucket twice and landed in it on zero occasions.

If the world was ending, I would be happy that I played castle golf. However, I have a lot more life to live. Bring on the future. It could be terribly exciting.
